Sweet on a Cure is a sweet-filled week taking place December 3 – 9, 2012, where bakeries, cafes, restaurants and catering companies across the Birmingham area will be selling specially designated sweets and donating 100 percent of the proceeds to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center. The funds raised from this fun and exciting event will support leading-edge cancer research at the Cancer Center. Find a participating Sweet partner near you.
The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center's Young Supporters Board launched Sweet on a Cure in 2009 as a dynamic way to invite Birmingham's vibrant restaurant community to support the fight against cancer. The Young Supporters Board is a group of 40 young professionals dedicated to supporting the mission of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Cancer affects everyone, and this is particularly true in Alabama. Our state ranks among the top 10 in cancer deaths, and each year nearly 25,000 Alabamians are diagnosed with the disease. Sweet on a Cure supports cancer research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, Alabama's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center and one of only 41 in the nation.
Funds raised by Sweet on a Cure 2012 will specifically be used to support the work of promising young cancer investigators. In today's economic climate, federal funding is more difficult to receive than ever, particularly for those scientists who are just beginning their careers. Sweet on a Cure will help young investigators test new theories and lay the groundwork for advancing scientific discoveries that could lead to substantial federal grant funding – and possibly a cure.
